We have replaced heavy fuel oil and SBP gasoline with liquefied natural gas and bioenergy. The steam boiler, completed in 2016, will significantly reduce fossil carbon dioxide emissions.
Efficient utilization of raw materials helps us reduce the waste generated in the process. In addition to cobalt and nickel, we also collect other metals for processing, including copper and various precious metals.
Our waste recycling rates are at a good level. 80 to 90% of the waste generated at the plant is recycled, which means that very little waste ends up at the waste facility. The most significant tipped process reject that we have not yet found a use for is iron precipitate.
We are actively monitoring the state of the environment by participating in various measurement projects and funding the environmental research work of various actors in the region. The effects our activities have on water, air and vegetation are assessed regularly. We are involved, for example, in moss and lichen research carried out by Metla (Finnish Forest Research Institute), which has continued for several decades.
